Book review: Hollywood Wives

Posted on

Good evening!

It is freezing here in Johannesburg! You won’t believe the amount of clothes I have on!!

Name of book: Hollywood Wives

Cover of

Cover of Hollywood Wives

Author: Jackie Collins

As you can see I am very into chick-lit these days! I have no idea why, perhaps it makes me feel better knowing there are people out there with worse problems than mine, even if they are fictional!

Picked it up at…. I picked it up for R6 at a second-hand bookshop nearby!

Rating: 6/10

What I liked: A great writer. I persist that Jackie Collins is indeed a great writer, a bit predictable, a tad over dramatic. But great all the same!

What I disliked: Too much ‘lead’ characters, way too many plots. In my humbled opinion the book was a few pages too long…

What is was all about: The whole story revolves around ‘the wives of Hollywood’ and what they get up to in their daily lives… It is very insightful into the world of the Rich and Famous =]

[thanks Dishilicious for pointing out my oversight!!]

Why would I recommend this book: This was a good book. Really it was. But there was a few things that bothered me! This book was great for me, because it took my mind of a lot of things going on! It was fun to read, easy.

Book review: Stolen

Well, hello again! =]

I am treating you to ANOTHER review tonight!!

Name of book: Stolen

Author: Susan Lewis

Picked it up at…. Another proud book from… Sisters’ job! =]

Rating: 7/10

What I liked: An amazing gripping story that keeps you engaged from start to finish! Brilliant, consistent characters and well thought out plot twists

What I disliked: ……. In some ways a bit too fast, but with more than 300 pages, I guess it had to end some time.  Wow, I really can’t think of anything else… I hate to say it, but it was one smashing, faultless book!

What is was all about: A girl gets abducted at the age of 3, and her live takes a twisting turn… The story starts a  few months before she discovers the biggest secret of her life! And from there on you get dragged into a brilliant story!

Why would I recommend this book: If you need an intriguing escape, that keeps you gripped till the end, you will love this. What I liked a lot is the fact that it had a great ending! Through all the drama and tragedy, it comes out loving and beautiful

Book Review: Blue Bloods

Posted on

Vampires???? No no no no!

That was my reaction after Twilight… Cause suddenly everyone thought they can make money through vampires and I decided to test all and keep what is good… But that didn’t work, because every book you got was ‘fantasy fiction’ so I kept away from it all! [except for House of Night and Vampire Academy!]

Name of book: Blue Bloods [ I read the first three]

Author: Melissa de la Cruz

Picked it up at…. A book shop in the mall, Bargain Books, 3 books for R100 [$14.68]

Rating: 10/10

What I liked: A brand new take on vampires, a proper story line, amazing intrigue, stunning characters and a need to keep you reading! The female leads is so amazingly written, and the males is just as good! No sign of feminism, or discrimination. I could go on hours and hours!!

What I disliked: There is a lot of perspective change and it was sometimes difficult to keep up, but once you are used to it, it doesn’t really bother you that much!

What is was all about: It is a coming-of-age story about Schuyler van Alen, a Blue Blood vampire… To me it is almost a mix between house of night and Gossip Girl. Vampires in New York! How perfect! I really enjoyed every moment…

Why would I recommend this book: It is different, well thought out and amazingly presented… I can’t imagen a better portrayal of New York Vampires! Nothing like anything I have ever read before!!

Review: Lethal Seduction

Posted on

I am starting to think my book lust changed from weird to chick-lit… Because once more I bring you a chick-lit book! And the LoTR and Stephan King books is still on the shelf… Untouched.

Bad! I know… I think it is time for another ‘odd’ book! But sadly I have already started with Things I want my Daughters to know by Elizabeth Noble…

Okay, back to the book review!

Name of book: Lethal Seduction

Author: Jackie Collins

Picked it up at…. Another book borrowed at my sisters’ job! I love places with books! =]

Rating: 8/10

What I liked: Jackie Collins is brilliant at what she does! And that is developing intrigue… There is about ten different characters, all different, all wonderfully developed and they all some how connect.. In ways you think unimaginable, she makes a connection and keeps you hooked.

What I disliked: I don’t know… That is was over too soon? I really can’t find fault! It did bother me some times that the plot was unraveling too fast and was a bit difficult to follow.

What is was all about: This was the follow-up to LA Connections, and all about Madison Castelli and people connected to her. Telling your more would just spoil everything! =]

Why would I recommend this book: If you need a break away from your own troubles, try doing it with the troubles of some one else! I loved this book, because when I read it I could forget about what is going on around me and clear my head for an hour or  two!

Review: Mini Shopaholic

Posted on

Welcome to my non-existent weekly book club!! =]

So, what ARE you reading at the moment??? PLEASEEEEE tell me?

Cover of

Cover of Mini Shopaholic: A Novel

I just finished Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Name of book: Mini Shopaholic

Author: Sophie Kinsella

Picked it up at…. My sister borrowed it for me at her new job.. There are books just laying around in the rooms!

Rating: 7/10

What I liked: I really enjoyed this book because it was easy… After Persuasion, I had difficulty reading again, because I was so into the book and it filled up my mind! But Mini Shopaholic was very easy to read, easy to follow and very easy to relax into.

What I disliked: Well… I isn’t totally into the characters, Becky is  a little but daft and Minnie is ‘incomplete’

What is was all about: Rebecca Brandon (née Bloomwood) from Confessions of a shopaholic fame, is now married, with a little girl stuck in the middle of a financial crisis. She decides it is time to throw her husband a surprise party to cheer him up and take his mind of work. But everything works against her!

Why would I recommend this book: Every one needs to learn what money can do to you, and it is a very relatable book!

Persuasion by Jane Austen

Posted on

Name of book: Persuasion (Wordsworth Classics Edition)

Author: Jane Austen

Photo via weheartit

Picked it up at…. Take Two ( website)

Rating: 9/10

What I liked: I simply loved this book! I liked Pride and Prejudice a lot ( my first Jane Austen) but loved this one ten times more! I dunno why, maybe it was the story line, maybe it was the heroin, but it was perfect!!

What I disliked: The high English… I guess this is logical, because well it is Jane Austen and high English is to be expected… But it does slow reading down a bit! But other than that, nothing!!

What is was all about: Anne Elliot is the heroin in this book and she does it with style… At 19  had fallen in love with Captain Wentworth, but her good friend Lady Russel persuaded her out of an engagement because she thought it a bad venture… 8 years later, Captain Wentworth is a few thousand pounds richer, Anne is still single and pursued by her cousin… But Captain Wentworth is still in love with her!!! I loved this book to bits and even had a romantic dream about it last night!!! LOL

Why would I recommend this book: Once in your life you will be persuaded by someone to go against everything in your nature… And this book shows you that even thought it was a bad move, perhaps it will just work out for the best and maybe even better than you ever thought!

Book Review: Glamour

Posted on

Welcome welcome to the first book club meeting! =]

Yeah what ever!! But is nice to have you all here!

My first book review will be about a book I finished yesterday!

Name of book: Glamour

Cover of

Cover of Glamour

Author: Louise Bagshawe

Picked it up at…. A second-hand book shop

Rating: 8/10

What I liked: I loved the storyline, the authenticity of the emotions and relationships and that is was all about three girls, who got knocked down early in live, who got back and made a multi million dollar success!

What I disliked: Whoa…. Now I need to think… Well at some point it got a bit difficult keeping up with 3 girls’ lives. But it was so well written you got over it fast!

What is was all about: 3 girls, Texan-honey Sally, English rose Jane and Jordanian Helen, meet in school where they realize they were destined to be best friends! Sally discovers early in her life that glamour will bring the world to your feet and teach it to Jane and Helen too. One by one their ‘rich and fabulous’ lives fall apart and they [individually] decide to never rely on anyone’s money ever again, but their own… And so they all strive to make the world their’s but struggle to succeed until they join forces. And Glamour is discovered… The hub of shopping in LA…

Why would I recommend this book: It is the perfect ‘girl power’ book. It motivates you to take life by the horns and not back down to any one… Because you are the most reliable person in your own life!
